SafeNet has appointed Dave Hansen to succeed Chris Fedde as president and CEO, the company said Monday, also announcing Hansen will join the board of directors.

Hansen comes to the company from BMC Software (NASDAQ: BMC), where he most recently served as a vice president and general manager.

Fedde joined Safenet in 2001 and served as president and CEO starting in May 2011, five years after taking the president and chief operating officer roles in May 2006.

“We want to thank Chris for the strong leadership that he has demonstrated throughout his tenure at SafeNet, ” said Dave Fishman, a board member and a partner at Vector Capital.

Fishman said Fedde led the company’s transformation from a security tool vendor to a pure-play data protection and rights management company.

“I have enjoyed the opportunity to work at and lead SafeNet over the past eleven years, ” Fedde said. “I am proud of all that we have accomplished, particularly the company’s transformation into an industry-recognized data protection market leader.

“SafeNet is a company with tremendous opportunities and I look forward to its continued success.”

Prior to Numara Software, he spent more than nine years at CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) and oversaw the creation of the company’s portfolio of cloud products and enterprise solutions.

He also led its security business unit and provided clients new versions of enterprise identity and access management products.

Hansen has also served as CA’s chief information officer, where he implemented the company’s global IT strategy, led applications development and oversaw IT compliance.
