ITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) has agreed to acquire Melbourne-based communications software provider C4i Pty Ltd. from the Longreach Group Limited for $16.8 million, Exelis announced Monday.

Exelis said it expects to close the transaction during first quarter of 2013, pending both Longreach Group shareholder approval and regulatory approvals, and said the transaction is not material to fiscal year 2012 results.

C4i, which has an office in Reston, Va., makes software for air traffic management and mobile communications systems used by commercial, homeland security and defense customers worldwide.

“C4i’s interoperable communications solutions and engineering talent will complement Exelis’ strong and successful record of integrating, deploying and operating large scale communications networks for our air traffic management, commercial and defense customers, ” said Michael Wilson, Exelis’ president for information systems. “This acquisition expands our portfolio of critical infrastructure solutions, builds on our presence in Australia, and brings us closer to our customers and markets of interest.”

C4i also has offices in Reston, Va.; Perth, Australia and Singapore.

The company also makes Internet Protocol-based voice control and switching technology to integrate radio devices into a command and control system for air traffic operators.

Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) also made an acquisition in Australia, picking up Canberra-based cybersecurity firm M5 Network Security to grow both cyber and communications offerings in the country.
