SAIC Prototyping Army IED Detection Robot

SAIC Inc. (NYSE: SAI) will provide the U.S. Army prototyping and engineering services for a robotic system designed to detect improvised explosive devices, the Defense Department announced Thursday.

According to official Army documents, the goal of the Man Transportable Robotic System program is to develop a two-person portable robotic system transportable by helicopter.

The Army’s 2013 modernization plan includes a $29 million acquisition of 1,508 explosive ordnance disposal systems, including 12 MTRS systems.

SAIC will have its work location determined by individual task order and the work is scheduled to finish by Aug. 30, 2017, according to the Pentagon.

The company holds spots on two large contract vehicles for combating IEDs, including a $900 million General Services Administration award and a $500 million Marine Corps award.
