Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) has appointed Maria Cino vice president of government relations for the U.S. and Americas regions, effective Aug. 1, the company announced Tuesday.

She will report to Gregg Melinson, VP for global government relations, and will be based in Washington.

The company said she will oversee HP’s relations with governments in the Americas region and will work with other coalitions, companies and associations on mutual interest issues.

She will also manage the company’s political programs in the U.S. and oversee HP’s political action committee.

Before joining HP, she served as vice president for federal government relations at Pfizer and also served as president and CEO for the 2008 Republican National Convention.

Between 2005 and 2007, she served as deputy transportation secretary and led the Transportation Department on an acting basis between July and September 2006 after then-secretary Norman Mineta resigned.

As deputy secretary, she oversaw DOT’s budget, administration and employees.

During President George W. Bush’s first term, she served as assistant secretary and director general of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service.

Mary Peters, Cino’s successor as secretary, joined an Accenture board comprised of several other former federal officials to advise the company’s federal services unit on market trends and strategies.
